My client, Mathias, from Switzerland, came to Cape Town for a medical convention and wanted a couple of days of proper relaxation before he succumbed to the 14 hour days that were about to fall upon him. He wanted an adventure and he got it!

Day 1. Coffee at Guy’s (Sha-bean) above Gary’s Surf School. Check out the wind at Sunrise (Muizenberg) and conclude that we will not be doing any kitesurfing. So, surfing it is. Oh shucks. Terrible life. Across to Witsands for a couple of sessions and then to the Brass Bell (in Kalk Bay and a must see as it literally juts out into the ocean) for dinner, beer and a live band.

Day 2. Airport to drop a key and then to Sunset Beach with a view of Table Mountain and perfect right handers. To Tableview for a cofffee and lunch and then surf number 2. And back to Sunset Beach for an evening session. Perfection. Check out the photo of the sunset. Back to Lakeside for a Thai dinner and a couple of beers at Simply Asia and then to the welcoming arms of our respective beds!

It really doesn’t get better than this. Mathias was so happy and relaxed for his conference and I had met yet another awesome person whom I could learn from and provide with a good old African Adventure. This is why I do what I do.

The colour scheme is more exciting this year with the entire canopy being colourful this year and a slightly more edgy look with harder angles in the patterns compared to previous years’ more curvy designs.

The new valve is amazing. Took us no time at all to figure out how the pump nozzle-valve relationship worked and the kite both inflates and deflates super quick.

In flight the kite is incredible. Beautiful to fly. We flew the 10m and both of us were very impressed. Another guy was flying the 12m and he only had good things to say. He was pretty much the only guy really parked and cruising at one stage as the wind was marginal and the kite looked very comfortable and responsive. There seems to be almost no flutter this year (thanks to new construction for the struts) which is pretty amazing for a 3 strut kite without batons. Incredibly light yet strong kites. First impression – wow!

I gave the 10m to a relative beginner. He crashed the kite hard a couple of times and I’m glad to say that it looks like the construction this year is super strong as per usual. Hopefully this year will be as good as last year when we only had one tear the whole season. These kites are incredibly well built. The beginner also commented that he loved the feel of the kite and that he might have to start saving up to replace his equipment. I watched him make good progress on the kite and I really feel that besides this being a great wave kite and all rounder, it really is an incredible kite for students to learn with.

All in all I’d say Ozone have done it again this year and we are so pleased to be using the Ozone Catalysts as our school kites again as they are fantastic in helping our students to progress rapidly and safely, are tough enough to withstand the rigors of being kite school kites, and advanced enough to excite our instructors which is no mean feat! This kite really is the go anywhere, do anything kite.

Piers Stephenson, who is a qualified IKO (International Kiteboarding Organisation) instructor, with over 20 years watersports experience, took the soccer players out to Sunrise Beach in challenging conditions. After mastering the foil kite flying technique, Piers took the boys through some safety measures and gave them a taste of how it’s really done.

The lesson was broadcast on LOVE PSL, SuperSport in November 2010.
